As rents have increased in London, areas of East London that were once considered to be another universe entirely have increasingly become more desirable places to live. The 2012 Summer Olympics were held in London, bringing in new construction & residents. Along with these new residents have come new places to drink. While Stratford & Newham may not yet have too many beer bars & breweries, this is likely to change, just has been the case with every other area of London once it gets on the radar. This roundup covers everything within the London Borough of Newham, which encompasses Stratford, Newham, West Ham, East Ham, Canning Town, Upton Park, Forest Gate, ExCel London, and London City Airport. For more nearby craft beer, see my post about beer near Bethnal Green. Here are the best places for craft beer in Stratford & the rest of Newham, including craft beer bars, bottle shops, breweries, and taprooms.

The Best Craft Beer Bars in Stratford – Newham – Canning Town – West Ham – East Ham

Mother Kelly’s Stratford

Mother Kelly’s in Stratford is one of the best places for craft beer in East London, with a few locations that dependably dispense great brews. The Stratford location of Mother Kelly’s is a bit quieter than the others but is still located just a short, pleasant walk away from Stratford International Station.

The bar has 20 taps, plus a large selection of cans & bottles in fridges that are also available to take away. They also serve wine. The food selection includes excellent cheese and meat boards, as well as toasties.

Mother Kelly’s also has other taprooms & bottle shops in Vauxhall, Bethnal Green, and Stoke Newington.

Tap East

Tap East is located down in the basement of the Westfield Center, a massive shopping mall that sprawls between the Stratford & Stratford International stations.

Upon hearing that a beer bar is located in a shopping centre, you might have some immediate thoughts – but rest assured, Tap East is a legitimately great beer bar that just happens to be in the Westfield. The founders also started Utobeer & The Rake in Borough Market.

The Stratford taproom has 16 taps & casks, including some of their own beer that is brewed on-site. I had their 11th Birthday Beer, which had just been released. There is also a can & bottle selection. The all-day bar serves coffee, tea, and wine as well.

Tap East gets busy on West Ham match days as well as major shopping days since it’s a much more pleasant experience than shopping. However, there’s plenty of space on the outside patio.

The Abbey Tap

The Abbey Tap is a sports bar – a West Ham bar through and through. So you may not want to go there if you’re heading to a match as an opposing fan at the nearby London Stadium. Pints are served in plastic on match days for a reason. West Ham fans will love The Abbey Tap, however.

It’s a perfectly nice pub, featuring 10 craft taps. Most lean towards larger craft breweries such as Camden, Beavertown, & Brewdog, but other offerings can also be found.

Being a sports bar, there are tons of TVs showing football matches, plus a food menu featuring burgers & nachos.

The Best Breweries in Stratford – Newham – Canning Town – West Ham – East Ham

Husk Brewing – Brewery & Taproom

Husk Brewing has recently moved to a new taproom & brewery near Canning Town from their previous location further down the DLR near West Silvertown. The short move still keeps them as one of the best places to drink near ExCel London.

The previous brewery was headquartered snugly between the DLR & a motorway in an industrial space that was still welcoming. The brewery was on the ground floor, with a bar & kitchen upstairs. They had recently started a batch of pale ale, so the room had that lovely brewery smell.

On my last visit, Husk Brewing offered 3 of their own beers, plus a couple from Signature, as well as cocktails. They also had a food menu with tasty burgers & fries, plus board games and a video game console.
