South Moravia is often referred to as the Moravian Tuscany. With rolling green hills and vineyards, it’s easy to see why. One local winery that is most evocative of Italy is the award-winning Spielberg Winery in Archlebov. After visiting Slavkov Castle, we arrived at the winery for our afternoon of South Moravian wine tasting under dramatic skies with brilliant streaks of blue, white, and grey, one of those days when the air gets so clear and crisp after rain.

Spielberg Winery History

Spielberg Winery is a new winery, having opened in 2002. However, its history goes back much further than that. It was previously a local cooperative. Vineyards in the area date back to the 13th or 14th century.

Spielberg Winery predominately produces dry wines with minerality. They are perhaps best known for their Rieslings & Chardonnays. Their main Spielberg line features Rhine Riesling, Wallachian Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Frankovka. Spielberg produces all of its wines solely from its own grapes. Multiple Spielberg wines have been selected for the National Czech Wine Salon, and they have won other awards as well, including Best Winery in the Czech Republic 2017.

Spielberg Winery Tour & Tasting

Our visit to Spielberg Winery began with a glass of their Crémant de Spielberg sparkling wine. A variety of similar wine tastings are available through the Spielberg Winery website.

After a quick toast, we then headed out to the balcony. There we were treated to fantastic views of the surrounding village and vineyards.

The winery property feels like an Italian villa, with beautiful terraces and gardens outside.

Following our photo shoot, we headed down to the tasting room. There we had a glass of their lovely Petit Chat, a 3 grape blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Meunier. It was a refreshing wine that would be nice to drink outside on a sunny day.

While we were in the tasting room, Spielberg Winery CEO Judr. Jaroslav Javornický told us all about the winery.

After lunch in the events hall (with plenty more wine, of course), we then continued our tour into the production area.

It was harvest time, so we saw some of the grapes that were being processed. It was a good introduction to the winemaking we would do the next day.

Down in the cellar, we had a 2021 Riesling right from the barrel that had been there for 2 months so far.

We also tasted a special seasonal treat: burčák, a young Czech wine found all over South Moravia each autumn.

Finally, we concluded our Spielberg Winery tour with a stop at their vineyards, which are about 5 minutes away from the villa.

The Moravian Tuscany is one of the most beautiful areas of the Czech Republic. Wineries like Spielberg are an added bonus.
