It’s no secret that beer is popular in the Czech Republic. The country drinks more of it than anywhere in the world, and if you’re visiting Prague, you’ll quickly find that beer is cheaper than any other drink, with or without alcohol.

Prague is, of course, filled with plenty of places where you can get plentiful, cheap, local beers. However, in addition to these traditional Czech beers, Prague also boasts a variety of excellent craft beer bars scattered throughout the city. Best of all, many of them are off the beaten tourist path, so you’ll not only have a nice beer, but it will also be a quieter pint if that’s your style.

Here are my favorite places to drink craft beer in Prague, including beer bars, breweries, taprooms, bottle shops, restaurants, and some of my favorite traditional Czech beer spots.

One way to get to know Prague’s beer scene is to take a beer tour. Book one of these great Prague beer tours today!

The Best Craft Beer Bars in Prague, Czech Republic

BeerGeek Bar

BeerGeek Bar was the first craft beer bar I ever visited in Prague, and it’s one I’ve returned to many times. Located east of Old Town and east of the train station, BeerGeek Bar is in a neighborhood filled with parks. The parks are enjoyable, of course, but what else is enjoyable? Drinking in a basement.

BeerGeek Bar has a huge list of 30 taps, plus hundreds of bottles. If that’s not enough for you, they have a large whiskey selection as well.

The tap list is constantly rotating. I was there twice, and the second time, there were several new beers to try, even though I had just been there a few days prior. The draft selection consists mostly of Czech & German selections. They also brew a house beer called Sibeeria.

U Kunštátů

U Kunštátů is the most notable craft beer bar in Prague’s Old Town. When I visited with friends, I led them across central Prague to get there. We pushed our way through the crowds near Old Town Square, passing by touristy bar after touristy bar. They thought I was leading them toward certain doom, but I was on a mission.

After a couple of quick turns down alleyways, we were suddenly in a quiet part of Old Town, despite it being the height of tourist season. Somehow, U Kunštátů has managed to remain a place that only people who are specifically seeking it out end up at, which is just fine for all involved.

There’s a huge outdoor beer garden where you can sit with friends and have a nice conversation over a beer. There’s also room inside, but on a warm August evening, nobody wanted to be indoors.

The bar features only three taps, but it also offers an impressive selection of over 100 bottles. Prices are a bit higher than you’ll find elsewhere in Prague, but this is still the Old Town. Be happy you’re not drinking at a tourist bar. It was here that I had one of my favorite craft beers I tried while in the Czech Republic, a lovely rye IPA called Rajda from Rodinný pivovar Zichovec.

This was also the only place that I heard “Bohemian Rhapsody” while in the Czech Republic, so bonus points to U Kunštátů.

Zlý časy

Zlý časy has one of the more unique bar layouts you’ll see. It’s an old school classic Czech pub, but there’s tons of great craft beer.

The taps are spread out across three floors, with each bar functioning separately. What at first seems like a decent selection of 12 taps gives way to 12 more on the floor below, along with a restaurant, then yet another 14 taps on the level below that.

Zlý časy is located south of central Prague, making it another good place to escape the crowds. There’s also a nice food selection consisting of Czech classics, burgers, and other pub food. Note that it is cash only.

Bad Flash Bar

Bad Flash Bar features a selection of 12 taps, offering a nice mix of their own beer and others from local breweries, along with a bottle selection.

It’s located not too far south from BeerGeek Bar. If you visit both, make sure that you go to Bad Flash Bar second. I cannot stress this enough. Otherwise, you’ll be faced with a ridiculous uphill walk, which nobody wants after drinking beer.

Beer And Friends (Formerly Pivoteka Illegal Beer)

Note: Pivoteka Illegal Beer closed and is now the home of Beer And Friends, operated by Fracek Brewing. I haven’t had a chance to return to the location, but the reviews make it sound like a similarly good beer bar.

Pivoteka Illegal Beer isn’t the biggest bar, nor does it have the largest selection. But what it does have is one of the more intimate, laid-back craft beer experiences you’ll find in Prague.

There are 6 taps, plus a few dozen bottles, all from the Czech Republic. It’s a relaxing place to grab a table & have a quiet conversation with friends, or a date.

Hells Bells Rockin’ Pub

Hells Bells has the exact opposite experience, at least as far as being quiet. Hells Bells plays metal and rock music, including live shows. The bar is located down an alleyway, behind a metal door that made it look like the place was closed. It was, of course, downstairs in the basement.

The beer selection isn’t extensive, but there are house beers and beers from Bad Flash and Raven, as well as a dozen or so bottles. It’s a dark, hole-in-the-wall spot that’s perfect if you like the music.

ROESEL – beer & food

ROESEL is a lovely little cafe located near the Prague Castle, just up the street from the Charles Bridge.

It’s a wonderful spot for a break at any time of day. In addition to a small craft beer selection that includes four taps, plus a fridge with a couple of dozen cans, the cafe also offers coffee, snacks, cakes, and a few dishes a day.

ROESEL is a chill sort of place where you can hang out and read or do work with your preferred drink.

The Beer Spot Prague

The Beer Spot Prague offers 10 rotating taps of Czech craft beer, plus a selection of cans and bottles. There’s also a food menu. It’s located just west of the Vltava River.

I love the stone bar, as well as the small beer garden out back. The indie music playlist is also a bonus.

Craft House Prague

Craft House Prague seems like a nondescript place from the decor, but where it really stands out is the beer selection.

The Prague beer bar features 27 beer taps, plus a huge selection of cans and bottles. All of the beer is from Czechia, including great breweries such as Sibeeria and Raven. It also functions as a bottle shop.

The beer bar has five rotating taps, plus a fridge with bottles and cans, including a lot of sours.

There is also a back beer garden.

The Best Breweries in Prague, Czech Republic

Strahov Monastery Brewery

There are a couple of monastery breweries in Prague. One, Strahov Monastery Brewery, is much closer to the city, not far from Prague Castle. The other is Brevnov Monastery Brewery of St. Adalbert.

In addition to being a brewery (which also offers tours), Pivovar Strahov is also a full restaurant.

However, you can also just get a beer and stand at the tables at the back of the patio area.

The monastery brewery makes a handful of beers in standard Czech styles, but they also have some more adventurous and unique styles that fall more into the craft realm. I especially enjoyed the dark lager.

U Fleků

U Fleků is one of the most popular traditional Czech breweries in Prague.

Sprawling across eight dining halls and a beer garden, the massive brewpub and restaurant features hearty Czech dishes as well as their own beers.

They only brew a couple of beers, but at a place like this, you don’t need more. The dark lager is especially popular.

Yes, it’s packed with tourists, but it’s still the quintessential Czech beer experience.

Pivovarský dům Benedict

Pivovarský dům Benedict is another traditional Czech brewery and restaurant.

Vinohradský Pivovar

Vinohradský Pivovar is a traditional Czech brewery, but it has more of a modern feel than some of its counterparts.

Former Prague Craft Beer Bars and Breweries

As with most places, Prague has seen some beer bars and breweries come and go, including Valhalla Beer Club, BeerMECA, ALE! bar, Maly/Velky, and Gastropub 20 PIP.

While beer & Prague are an unbeatable combination, most visitors stick with the cheaper, mass-produced beer from larger breweries like Pilsner Urquell & Budweiser Budvar. There’s nothing wrong with those beers, of course, but for a deeper look into Prague’s beer culture, be sure to venture out to the city’s great craft beer bars as well.

  1. When I was reading this I realize that this is the best blog as compare to others. Its really appreciated.

  2. Thanks, but do they have craft beer at Hells Bells? Another place… just down from Bad Flash is a small craft beer bar called Lya Beer Café https://lyabeercafe.cz/, ever been there? Small place but very nice selection.

  3. Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll have to check it out. Hells Bells does have craft beer, but it’s a small selection. I included it because it was a different vibe than the other spots
