Mérida, Mexico, is a beautiful city that’s great to explore on foot. The only drawback is that it’s hot. So it’s important to cool off, and what better way is there to do that than with ice cream? Here are my favorite places for ice cream in Mérida, Mexico, including local heladerías serving traditional paletas and scoops, as well as newer shops offering creative flavors and gelato.
Many Mérida food tours include a stop at a local ice cream shop. Find the best Mérida food tours here!

XAMAN
Calle 47 is one of the most famous streets in Mérida. It’s lined with beautiful buildings, restaurants, bars, and shops.
One of these little marketplaces is the Punto MID Centro Cultural. Inside, you’ll find a cool bookstore, a coffee shop, an art gallery, and a little kiosk selling frozen ice cream and sorbet bars known as paletas.

This tiny-but-mighty kiosk offers a wide variety of paleta flavors. Over 50, in fact!

The bars use premium ingredients, including coconut and chocolate.

I enjoyed the piña coco, a classic tropical flavor combination. Meanwhile, my girlfriend enjoyed the decadent Carlos V chocolate ice cream bar.

Pola Gelato Shop
For a rich treat, head to Pola Gelato Shop in the Mérida city center.

The shop’s rotating seasonal selection includes awesome, unique flavors. They also sell house-made sodas using syrup and sparkling water.
Between the two of us, we enjoyed the Chocolflan, Cacahuate con Caramelo y Chocochips, Tascalate, Cremita De Coco, and Pan De Muerto.

All of the flavors are super creamy with big chunks of each filling.

El Colón Dulcería and Sorbetería
Mérida’s oldest ice cream shop is El Colón Dulcería and Sorbetería, which has been in operation since 1907. El Colón has five shops scattered around the city.
El Colón specializes in sorbets that use local, native fruit, featuring flavors such as mango, tamarind, guava, and more. The shop is a frequent stop for celebrities when they’re in town, including everyone from Jackie Kennedy to Diego Luna.

The two most-visited El Colón locations are the original ice cream shop on Plaza Grande and the large shop along the picturesque Paseo Montejo. Based on the overall reviews, I’d recommend visiting the latter, since the quality of their locations seems to vary.
