On the second night of our tour around the Vasterbotten region, we stayed in central Umeå at the historic Stora Hotellet.
The Stora Hotellet was built in 1895, but has recently been refurbished as a unique boutique hotel to coincide with the city being named European Capital of Culture 2014. The hotel has a nautical theme, which is present in every detail from the chains hanging in the lobby to the decor of all 82 rooms.
For example, there was an octopus on the carpet of my room.
And this was the door hanger to request to have your room cleaned.
Inside the room, there was a book showcasing Stora Hotellet’s inclusion in the World Boutique Hotel Awards Collection.
The room itself was cozy, but plush. The hotel has several different room types. This was one of the Adventure rooms.
In addition to being lovingly decorated in keeping with the history of the building & the nautical theme, the hotel also does the modern necessities right. It had one of the best wifi networks of any hotel I’ve ever stayed in, which came in handy for backing up photos and doing some work.
The historic building is part of a complex of shops & restaurants, right next to Umeå’s new cultural center.
We visited the hotel’s restaurant, Gotthard’s Krog, for dessert as part of our tour of Umea’s best restaurants.
The restaurant also hosts the hotel’s included breakfast every morning. If you’re familiar with breakfasts in Sweden, they know how to do things right, and the Stora Hotellet was no different. The food included local & organic ingredients. They had fresh fruit, Vasterbotten cheese, salmon, meats, fresh bread, a waffle maker, and much more. It was a great start to our next day.
The intimate boutique hotel has won numerous awards, and it’s easy to see why. Stora Hotellet Umeå is a welcome difference from any chain hotel, and one of the most unique hotels I’ve ever stayed at.
Disclosure: My visit to Umeå/Västerbotten was a TBEX press trip sponsored by Visit Umeå & Visit Sweden. All opinions are 100% my own.
