Cádiz, Spain, is known for the local specialty sherry, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t also plenty of regular wine to enjoy. Cádiz wine bars range from places that are almost entirely focused on sherry and wine to excellent local restaurants that also serve local wine.

On this list of the best wine bars in Cádiz, I’ve included a diverse mix of spots to satisfy whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s historic bars serving sherry from the barrel or modern restaurants and places offering natural wines.

One way to get a nice introduction to Cádiz is to take a tour. Check out these excellent tour options & book now!

The Best Wine Bars in Cádiz

Taberna La Manzanilla

Taberna La Manzanilla is an old-school sherry bar that’s been in operation since 1932. It’s a multigenerational family spot that’s been passed down through the decades.

Stacked sherry barrels behind an old wood bar greet you as you enter.

The bar is also decorated with shelves of bottles and bullfighting posters. They also sell sherry by the bottle to go.

As the name suggests, the bar’s specialty is Manzanilla, which is produced in nearby Sanlúcar de Barrameda. It’s similar to fino sherry.

I enjoyed a Manzanilla Madura along with a snack. The bar doesn’t have a ton of food, but I recommend the mini cheese, which comes in a few flavors.

The bartender wrote my bill in chalk on the bar, as I can imagine his father had done, and his grandfather had done before that. Who needs fancy technology?

Gorrión Wine Bar

The alleyways of El Pópulo are my favorite area to explore in Cádiz. These narrow streets are filled with historic sites like the Roman theater, as well as plenty of great restaurants, cocktail bars, ice cream shops, and wine bars.

Just through the historic Arco Del Populo is one of my favorite wine bars in Cádiz, Gorrión Wine Bar.

While Gorrión Wine Bar does have sherry, it’s primarily a place to go for an excellent overall wine selection.

Whether you sit outside at the barrel tables with stools in the alleyway or in the bright inside space, there are plenty of wines to drink.

There are six wine taps, but there’s also a huge selection of bottles (which can also be purchased to drink elsewhere). Additionally, there are many open bottles, so you can ask the servers about what’s available at the moment.

You can’t have wine without snacks, of course, so Gorrión Wine Bar also has that covered. They offer a variety of smoked and salty treats, including canned fish, sliced charcuterie, cheese, pinchos, and sandwiches.

I enjoyed two beloved local foods from Cádiz: local Payoyo cheese and dried salted tuna, along with warm bread.

La Candela

La Candela is a cool Spanish and Asian fusion tapas bar with excellent wine pairings.

The restaurant is a tough reservation. I actually didn’t hear back about my request because there was no availability, but bar seating is for walk-in customers. People were queuing about 15 minutes before opening, and the bar filled almost right away.

Their Vietnamese rolls with deep-fried mussels are an incredible dish. Messy and saucy with sweet and sour sauce and aioli, the flavorful rolls had a great crunch. It’s one of those dishes I still dream about long after leaving.

I also enjoyed the white fish ceviche, calamari, garlic croquettes, and pork cheeks.

The staff made great wine recommendations for everything. La Candela is an awesome restaurant and wine bar.

Listán Wine Tasca

Listán Wine Tasca on Plaza de San Antonio has one of the best wine selections in Cádiz, along with excellent snacks. Their cheese selection is especially notable, including various drunken Stilton cheeses.

They offer over 450 bottles, including some 220 from the region of Cádiz. They also host tastings and even wine certification classes. The staff are happy to provide recommendations.

I first enjoyed a local white, along with a cured blue and black garlic cheese. That’s a cheese that’s definitely not for everyone, but I loved it!

The chicharron especial is also delicious. It melted in my mouth.

I also enjoyed the bandarillas of tuna and queso Payoyo.

Listán Wine Tasca has both a large indoor space and patio space, so there’s a lot of area to cover. Service can be a bit spotty as a result, so note that you might have to be patient.

Taberna Casa Manteca

Taberna Casa Manteca is one of the most famous restaurants in Cádiz.

Founded in 1953, it’s become popular not just with locals but also with tourists. It has expanded over the years to include a mini-complex of three bars and restaurants. The crowds overflow so much that when there’s no table space, people sit on the curb in the shade.

I arrived about 15 minutes before opening on a Monday, and I was the first person there. It actually took a bit to fill up, so this is the best time to go if you want to beat the crowds. As a result, I was able to get a nice spot at the bar.

The bar serves a variety of drinks, of course, including local wine. While the wine selection isn’t nearly as notable as some of these other Cádiz wine bars, the food menu of local dishes includes many must-eat Andalusian specialties.

I started with local cheese with asparagus marmalade. That’s definitely something different, but it was interesting and I enjoyed it. I also had some nice and spicy Morcón.

Then it was time to have one of my favorite Andalusian dishes, salmorejo. This cold tomato soup was outstanding. It was served with olive oil ice cream and bits of tuna, along with lovely warm bread. It’s one of the house specialties at Taberna Casa Manteca.

One note is that the fried menu items aren’t available for a little while after opening, since they come from their restaurant across the street. This isn’t a huge deal if you’re pacing things out with multiple courses, and the excellence of their fried seafood is worth the wait.

As my second course, I had the local delicacy (and another house specialty), tortillitas de camarones, a shrimp fritter. It was amazing, freshly fried and packed with shrimp.

I also enjoyed the carabineros, shrimp croquettes that were also rich with shrimp.

Sitting inside lets you get a sense of the history of Taberna Casa Manteca. The walls are covered with old photos, old newspaper articles, and bullfighting memorabilia. There was even a menu from a bar I’d visited in Havana, La Bodeguita del Medio.

While a bar like this might seem like one that you can skip if it’s too busy, it’s not a tourist trap. The continued presence of locals means they’re still doing things right after all these years.

Bar La Tabernita

Whether they’re tapas bars in Andalucia, or pintxos bars in the Basque Country in San Sebastian or Bilbao, Spain’s tabernas have one thing in common. You can’t be picky about space.

bar la tabernita cadiz 700x525

Sometimes you might have to elbow in a bit, other times you might have to stand in an unconventional space. So when I ended up being guided to a small shelf in the doorway at Bar La Tabernita in Cádiz, I didn’t mind. Flexibility helps here, as does being a solo traveler.

Despite my doorway setup, I had a lovely lunch at La Tabernita, all washed down with an Amontillado from Dios Baco.

Skewers of smoked tuna and cheese are one of my favorite local dishes in Cádiz, especially with sherry.

I also enjoyed the mussels and the fried cod balls.

Bar La Tabernita doesn’t have the long history of a place like Casa Manteca (it only opened in 2011), but the quality is just as good, if not better. While the experience at Casa Manteca is nice, head to Bar La Tabernita as an alternative if the former is too crowded.

Mercado Central de Abastos de Cádiz

As with most European cities, heading to the local central market is a must-do if you’re a fan of food and drink. The Mercado Central de Abastos de Cádiz is no different.
