The summertime weather in Naples, Italy, gets hot. One of the best ways to cool off is with a nice creamy cup or cone of gelato. But whatever the season, there are some great places for gelato in Naples. Here are a few of my favorites!

But first, here are a few quick gelato tips that will help you get the most out of your time in Italy. First, if you see brightly colored gelato piled high above containers, avoid that shop.

Low-quality shops will use dyes to entice you, but authentic banana gelato shouldn’t be bright yellow. Some shops have overflowing containers of gelato that’s been filled with air. Real gelato should be denser and creamy.

The Best Gelato in Naples

Il Gelato Mennella

The first time I visited one of the many Naples gelato shops run by Il Gelato Mennella, I thought there was a massive queue.

But it turns out the queue was a bunch of local teenagers lining up for some sandwich place. While I do love sandwiches, I was happy to be able to get my gelato from Mennella easily.

The unassuming shop offers some of the best gelato in Italy. On this same trip I had tons of great gelato in Rome and Milan, but Il Gelato Mennella was my favorite I’d had anywhere.

Il Gelato Mennella, which has eight locations around Napoli, has some stunning flavors that are inventive but also classically Italian. Many flavors pair well together, which I appreciate since creating a good combo is an integral part of the gelato experience.

The chain also operates pastry shops. In fact, that’s how Antonio Mennella first got his start in Torre Del Greco near Naples in 1969.

We had a couple of excellent cups of gelato between the two of us.

One included the quintessential Naples dessert baba au rhum, cookies and cream, and cremino al sale di Maldon, a salty chocolaty peanut combo.

Our other combo was black cherry, orange, and almond.

All of the gelato was rich and creamy, plus all of the flavors were intense.

Valenti

Via dei Tribunali runs through the heart of Naples’ famed Centro Storico. This pedestrian street is packed with bars and restaurants, including not just some of the best pizza in Naples but in the entire world.

After you’ve had your lunch or dinner, save a bit of room for some gelato.

Valenti offers quality gelato with intense flavors. I particularly loved the salted caramel, as it was so densely packed with flavor that it was almost like a sauce.

I also enjoyed the Sole di Napoli, which was lemony and crunchy.
