Kakheti is Georgia’s largest winemaking region, producing 70% of the country’s wine. If you’re a wine connoisseur, visiting the area is a must to see firsthand the traditional Georgian winemaking process. While spending extended time in Kakheti would be great, not everyone has the time to stay in the region or wants to figure out those travel logistics. Thankfully, it’s easy to take a day trip to Kakheti from Tbilisi, so you can still use the city as your base, which is what I did. I stayed in the capital city, but then I visited Kakheti multiple times to taste wine and eat local food. Here are the best Kakheti wine tours, with options to fit every budget & schedule.

Kakheti Wine Tours

Excellent wine is one of my top reasons for visiting Georgia. While there are tons of great wine bars in Tbilisi, if you really want to learn about the country’s wine-making tradition, head to Kakheti. There are plenty of different tours available.

Vines & Villages Signaghi Wine Tour from Tbilisi

My favorite Kakheti Wine tour is this Vines & Villages Signagi Wine Tour.

Over a full day, this tour visits several top wineries & also includes a visit to the town of Signagi and an authentic Georgian supra experience.

Their expert-led tours are conducted in small groups with generous amounts of food and wine. You won’t be hungry or thirsty when you return to Tbilisi.

I especially enjoyed getting to visit small wineries & natural wineries on our tour.

We concluded the tour with an outstanding dinner at a local Georgian family’s house. They also have their own winery & boutique chacha distillery. This traditional meal was an experience I will never forget.

While these tours are more expensive than other tours of Kakheti, you definitely get your money’s worth, making them the best option for those who want to immerse themselves in the region’s food & drink. Read a full review of my Signagi tour experience here.

If you want to spend even more time in Kakheti, they also offer 2-day tours so you can stay overnight.

Kakheti Wine Region, Including 7 Wine Tastings from Tbilisi

Check out this tour if you’re looking for a budget Kakheti wine tour option. While the groups are larger than some other tours (up to 18 people), the tour has excellent ratings on Get Your Guide. I haven’t taken this specific tour, but I took a day trip tour to Armenia with the same company, so I can say they offer quality tours that are fun & well-organized.

The full-day tour includes several food & wine stops and visits to Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino & Signagi.

One of the main stops of the tour is at Khareba Winery, the largest wine cellar in Georgia.

The Kavreli winery is located inside a former bomb shelter that stretches deep into the Caucasus Mountains. It’s a unique facility.

Wine tastings take place deep within the tunnels, as well as in other places around the property. They also offer other activities, including cooking classes (not included on this tour).

Kahketi Full-Day Wine Tasting Tour with Lunch

This small group Kakheti tour includes a full day of wine, food, and chacha.

Like many other tours, the stops include Khareba Winery and smaller wineries such as Okro’s.

The day’s highlight is a lunch at an authentic family-owned wine cellar in Velistsikhe.

Tbilisi to Kakheti, Signaghi, Telavi Tour with 7 Wine Tastings

If you’re looking for an overview of everything Kakheti has to offer but are on a budget, look no further than this tour of Kakheti, Signaghi, and Telavi.

In addition to stops in the aforementioned towns, the tour includes wine tastings.

What makes this tour unique is that it offers two different food classes & some food tasting rather than a lunch or dinner.

One class shows traditional Georgian bread making, while the other shows the traditional Georgian candy known as churchkhela.

Note that depending on who else has booked, the tour might be conducted in both English & Russian.

Tbilisi to Kakheti Wine Region Tour with 8 Wine Tastings

For another Kakheti tour option, this tour from Budget Friendly Tours hits the highlights.

In addition to stops at Signagi & the Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino, the tour also includes tastings of 8 different wines at local wineries.

Private Kakheti Wine tour from Tbilisi – Enjoy 6 sorts of wine

While many of the tours above are small-group tours, there are also private tour options, such as this one from All Travel Georgia.

Their customized private tour can include stops at Badiauri, Signagi, Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino, and Kavreli.

In Kavreli, their optional stop at Khareba includes not just a tour of the wine caves but also their cooking classes.

When I visited Khareba Winery, we participated in several cooking demonstrations, including Georgian bread, khachapuri, khinkali, and churchkhela.

These cooking classes were a great way to immerse ourselves even further in Georgian culture than just eating and drinking.

As you can see, there are plenty of great Kakheti wine tours to choose from. I hope you enjoy visiting the region as much as I did!
