Antipasto. Tagliere. Charcuterie. Meat and Cheese. You’ll find all of these terms used at various restaurants and bars in Rome. Whatever your preferred way of saying it, there’s no better way to start a meal than with a nice charcuterie board of cured meats and local cheeses. A good platter can even serve as the entire meal in the best cases. Rome has many places where you can get some great taglieri and drinks. Here are my favorite cheese and meat platters in Rome.

The Best Platters in Rome (Tagliere)
Il Tagliere Toscano
Il Tagliere Toscano is my favorite place for charcuterie boards in Rome. Their massive platters easily fall into the category of full meals.
Their taglieri are priced per person. As a result, they can be a little bit pricy, but that’s not too surprising for this location in the busy tourist area of Centro Storico, plus, like I said, they’re huge. Just look at this thing!

They also offer a variety of different boards. You can use this to your advantage, thanks to the per-person pricing. Each person can order a different board, so you can share a wider variety of meats and cheeses.

For example, I got the Truffle platter, while my girlfriend got the Cinta Senese. We had zero overlap between the two platters, which were served on the same massive board. The truffle platter was described as “truly a triumph of truffles.” I can confirm that’s true. Every element on the platter had some truffle in it.

We also ordered some fresh focaccia, which I recommend doing since there’s so much meat and cheese to pair.
The service was also good, as our waiter brought over some free bonus burrata. That’s how easy it is to win me over (of course, all the other excellent food helped).
There is also a location in Prati, closer to the Vatican, as well as one in Palocco.

Pane e Salame
When you name your business Pane E Salame, you’d better deliver on that promise. Thankfully, this bar near the Trevi Fountain does.
Meat and cheese platters are the specialty at Pane E Salame, but they also serve panini. The boards come in various sizes per person, so they can fit any budget or level of hunger. But I recommend bringing some friends!

In addition to the taglieri, which are some of the best in Rome, there is also a nice selection of wine and local Rome craft beer.

Libreria Caffè Bohémien
Libreria Caffè Bohémien is a great little neighborhood cocktail bar in Monti.
Many of the taglieri in Rome seem to lean toward being a bit meat-heavy. That’s one reason why I especially enjoy the platter at Libreria Caffè Bohémien, which has a better balance between cheese and meat than most places.
Many of the cheeses on charcuterie boards tend to be milder since not everyone likes strong cheese. This is another selling point of their tagliere mixto, which included a lovely Gorgonzola.

While the cheese is excellent, the meat is not sidelined. The smoked beef carpaccio was our favorite of the platter.
This is an excellent platter all around and served with plenty of warm toasted bread.

Blackmarket Hall
Blackmarket Hall is a jovial cocktail bar located in a basement in Monti. In addition to great cocktails, the bar offers a robust food menu.
We enjoyed the selection of cold cuts and cheese for two persons served with pear compote.

The delicious charcuterie board included Slow and Naturally Aged raw ham, Smoked Beef Carpaccio, Ciauscolo sausage, Semi-matured Pecorino cheese “Cacio de Roma,” Caciotta “Valmista” cheese with walnuts, and Pecorino Cheese with black truffle from Alba.

Pork N Roll
Pork N Roll combines three of my favorite things: beer, pork, and rock.
Needless to say, the menu is heavily meat-focused. The meat is actually from their own farm.

I enjoyed a salumi tagliere, which included a platter of cured meats handcrafted by the family’s “Bottega Roccia” pork butchery with a taste of cheese, homemade jam, and bread.
Their food is one of my favorite things to eat in Rome.

Proloco Centocelle
Centocelle is an up-and-coming neighborhood in Rome that has become accessible due to a Metro extension. There are a few good bars, restaurants, and gelato shops in Centocelle that are worth the journey.
I first learned about Proloco Centocelle from Stanley Tucci’s excellent TV show, “Searching For Italy.” In the Rome episode, he visited the meat and cheese shop. Once I saw it, I knew I had to go have one of their meat and cheese plates.

Cases are filled with delicious meats and cheeses are the centerpiece of the shop, which also functions as a restaurant. As a result, the place smells lovely.

Get yourself some wine or local beer and a tagliere misti, and thank me later.
