After driving from Cancun to Chichen Itza, I arrived at my destination for the night: the Hotel Villas Arqueologicas Chichen Itza.

The hotel is a small resort located just outside the ruins. It’s a perfect place to spend the night before exploring one of the world’s most unique sights.

Check-in at the resort was easy. I was led to my room, which was located at the far end of the complex, near the pool.

While the room was fairly small, it had two beds. It would be perfect for a small family or friends who are traveling together.

The bathroom was standard, but the shower was good. Also, there were two bottles of water waiting for me in the room.

The pool looked inviting, but I opted to relax for a while in my room instead. I had thought about going in the pool later, but by that point, the outside patio surrounding it was filled with people, and I didn’t want to ruin anyone’s appetite or have anyone staring at me while I swam.

The hotel has a nice restaurant on-site as well. You can eat inside or out. I chose to eat outside, and surprisingly, it was not buggy. Unlike on my first stint in the Cancun area, I had opted to put on bug repellant, so this may have been why.

I started my dinner with some good chips & guacamole.

Then for my main course I had grilled Yucatean sausage.

The hotel has a lounge with a huge TV, pool table, and library, which is nice since the rooms are on the smaller side.

I called it an early night since I wanted to be up early in the morning to go visit the Chichen Itza ruins as soon as they opened at 8 A.M.

Here’s the best part of the Hotel Villas Arquelogicas. The hotel is located a short 5-10 minute walk from the smaller back entrance of Chichen Itza. You can see just how close it is on the map below.

As a result, you can be one of the first people inside the park. I was actually the first one on the grounds that day who wasn’t an employee.

If you’re going to Chichen Itza, I recommend staying at Hotel Villas Arqueologicas or one of the other nearby hotels rather than taking a long day trip from Cancun itself. I only stayed in Chichen Itza for one night due to my travel schedule, but I think two nights there would be just perfect. You could arrive the first afternoon/evening and then relax by the pool & have dinner, and then you could spend the next day exploring Chichen Itza. You’d have one more evening to do similar relaxing (or take in the night show at the Mayan ruins), then you could drive elsewhere in the morning.

I enjoyed my experience at the Hotel Villas Arqueologicas, as well as Chichen Itza as a whole. It was a great value for what I paid, and I’d love to go back sometime.
