When I see a whimsical travel story, there are a few countries that I would immediately assume the story is from. Japan is at the top of the list. Near the bottom is Russia, land of harsh winters and Putin, but perhaps I should reconsider that after seeing this story about what a Russian river cruise company is doing to attract travelers.
Since 2008, VODOHOD Russian River Cruises has had cats dressed as sailors patrolling the Nikolay Chernyshevsky, a ship which cruises between St. Petersburg & Moscow.
It all started with the idea to have one cat dressed up in a maritime uniform. The cat, whose name is Sailor, looks exactly the way you’d expect a Russian ship officer cat to look.
A friend joined Sailor onboard later, so there now are two cats helping keep the ship purring (at least when they aren’t asleep). I’m not a cat person, but these cats seem cool, at the very least because they seem moderately tolerant of being dressed up in sailor costumes. Good work, Russia!
