Flight delays happen, and most of the time there’s nothing that can be done. While delays can be caused by a number of reasons, there are some situations, such as with weather or maintenance issues, where you just have to come to terms with the fact that you aren’t going to make it to your destination on time. That’s much preferable than flying into a storm, or flying on an unsafe aircraft.
Not everyone feels this way, namely a large group of tourists from China who were trying to fly from Bangkok, Thailand to Chongqing on Orient Thai Airlines. According to the Daily Mail, their flight was delayed for 10 hours overnight on Friday night. Orient Thai set up hotel rooms for the passengers, which is more than what some airlines would do, but this was not sufficient to placate some of the angry passengers, who began to sing the Chinese national anthem in the terminal.
Rejecting the offer, part of the group made their own demands for “a public apology from the airport, 1,000 Yuan ($157) compensation and a ‘bigger’, Boeing 747 aircraft to fly them to Chongqing,” or else they would refuse to board.
Yeah, good luck with that. Airlines really don’t care whether you board or not, and if you’re complaining about not being able to go home, refusing to go home is an odd tactic.
For their efforts, some passengers were blacklisted from future travel by the Chongqing Tourism Bureau.
As I said, delays suck, but there’s only so much that you can do about them. I’m all for forcing airlines to compensate passengers for delays and accommodate them if they are stuck overnight (which is what Orient Thai did in this case – it sounds like they made a good effort to keep everyone happy), but that happens through set policies and not just large groups banding together to make demands at the airport.
