If your internet seemed a bit slow today, it’s probably because a teaser for the new Star Wars film was released to coincide with the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California. The web then exploded some time shortly thereafter.
Piggybacking off of this excitement is Japan’s ANA, who announced their newest livery – a Boeing 787 painted to look like R2-D2.
Here are photos and video of the new ANA R2-D2 plane:
The airline says “The R2-D2 motif is also a great match to ANA’s blue logo and design that appear on the main fuselage.
The R2-D2 character has a reputation for strong, reliable service—one of the hallmarks of ANA’s 5-star quality service.”
That’s some strong brand-speak, but Star Wars is cool so I’ll let it slide.
More from the ANA website:
ANA has launched a 5-year ANA Star Wars Project
leading up to 2020 that will
connect Japan to the global market.
With the launch of the project,
ANA has announced the design of an R2-D2 Jet*—Star Wars livery,
with the iconic R2-D2, on its newest aircraft 787-9 Dreamliner.
*The jet is scheduled to fly on international routes this autumn.
With the skies as our stage,
we are embarking on a range of novel
initiatives as we head into the future.
Expect a new world full of surprises!
In addition to the new aircraft livery, ANA launched a Star Wars-themed website called ANA Planet, that appears to just count down to the start of their Tokyo to Houston service on June 12th, except the counter doesn’t match up with that date (it does match up with May 12th – so either the launch date is wrong or the counter is wrong).
Specific routes that will be flying the new Star Wars plane have not been announced yet, but expect it to fly casual.
