Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers left Sunday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder early, which at the time was blamed on flu-like symptoms. However, today we learned the true reason for his early departure: bed bugs.

Some choice quotes from Irving, via Cleveland.com:

“Our team said I was out with flu-like symptoms — it was honestly from the bed bugs from the frickin Hilton that we stayed at,” Irving said angrily following Monday’s 96-88 loss to the Detroit Pistons.

“As you can see I got it at the top of my head, it’s just like bed bugs and I didn’t get any sleep. We came into the game, then I was freaked out, then I started feeling nauseous so it was just a whole bunch of BS honestly.”

The Cavaliers stayed at The Skirvin Hilton Hotel, a landmark destination in downtown Oklahoma City where many teams stay.

“Just imagine how freaked out you’d be if you saw friggin five, big ass bed bugs just sitting on your pillow,” Irving said. “I woke up itching and I’m just looking around and I’m like, ‘Are you serious right now?’ It was 3 a.m. and I was so tired at that point. It was whatever.”

Bed bugs are a fear of many travelers, as they can be found at any hotel, no matter how high quality of a property it may be. However, beyond some welts & itching, they tend to mostly be an annoyance, provided you don’t then bring them home. Who knew they could also make someone feel nauseous?

The Skirvin Hilton Hotel where the Cavaliers stayed before playing the Oklahoma City Thunder may be a place where lots of teams stay, but it has a reputation for being haunted. Surely there must be other hotels to stay at in Oklahoma City that aren’t haunted or inhabited by bed bugs?

A check of The Bed Bug Registry, which I recommend visiting before going to a hotel or renting an apartment if you’re concerned about bed bugs, shows that there have indeed been a couple of complaints about bed bugs at The Skirvin Hilton in Oklahoma City. Kyrie Irving might want to add his own experience to the list.
